DJ (aka “Dr. John”) was a self-taught guitarist, bassist and singer. While his day job was that of a Psychologist, his night jobs were always been
much more creative and artistic. He was the bassist and back-up vocalist for the Night Watchmen.
DJ acquired his first guitar from a cousin when he was 13 years old -- for the huge sum of $10. Two years later he played his first public gig with the
group Savage in a battle-of-the-bands contest in Milwaukee, WI. He also played in the hard rock bands ThunderHead , Griffin, and Canadian
Club while living in the land of the cheese-heads. He has been lucky enough to have had personal mentors from the Midwest music scene that
included Ruby Starr (Ruby Starr & Grey Ghost -- Rest in Peace Ruby), Jim
“Dandy” Mangrum (Black Oak Arkansas), and Rick Nielson (Cheap Trick). In 1979, DJ moved out of
the snow-belt down to Tampa, FL to complete his Ph.D. While in Florida, he played in the “no-wave” alternative-rock band
Twitch. In 1987 D.J. left the sunshine state to move to the San Francisco Bay Area.In California, DJ became a
“studio rat”.
He learned to play bass at Pure Sound Studios – doing samples and loops for local hip-hop projects -- and by getting pointers
from California musician Michael Kane (from Jesse Colin Young & The Youngbloods). The studio work finally lead to
him join SpunJunket – a popular Marin based funk/hip-hop/fusion band.
After SpunJunket’s first CD release, he joined Secret Lives – an all-original 80’s
style rock band.
The studio work still continued, and eventually, DJ met Gentry Bronson (the founder of the Night Watchmen)
through a close mutual friend – Sterling (the founder of VibeCheck).
DJ joined the Night Watchmen in 2001.
His influences (in addition to the above bands & musicians) included:
Captain Kangaroo,
Alice Cooper,
Mr. Rogers,
Marilyn Manson,
The Tele-Tubbies,
|
 |
L. Ron Hubbard,
Tiny Tim,
Timothy Leary,
and
Batman. |
